What to Binge on Netflix Right Now

What to watch on Netflix 2019

It’s been gray and rainy in LA this weekend which basically never happens so it can only mean one thing: we get to be worthless and binge Netflix. I certainly don’t advocate wasting your life watching Netflix all the time but we all know you need a good do-nothing binge day now and again.

Here are some of my fav binge-worthy picks:

For all the feel-good feels

Monty Don’s Gardens Series

That’s right. Trust.

Stop what you’re doing right now, drop everything and RUN to watch my new favorite show: any items in the Monty Don Garden Series. I’ve basically been a walking billboard or this how on my Instagram because I’m so obsessed.

Monty Don’s French Gardens – Monty Don’s Italian Gardens – Big Dreams, Small Spaces

The host, Monty Don, is apparently a super famous gardener in England. OF COURSE the English would have a famous gardener (correction: HORTICULTURALIST) that people swoon over. So British. I’m obsessed.

Anyway, Monty has the cutest British accent and says things like “I was absolutely bowled over by the amount of celery sprouts they were cultivating!” and he totally means it.

When you watch Monty Don I guarantee you will:

  1. Learn things. All the gardening and historical things you never knew you wanted to learn. BUT YOU WILL LOVE THEM
  2. Feel cultured AF
  3. Believe for the first time in months to years that maybe the world isn’t completely going to shit/ feel more at peace
  4. Want/need to start growing a garden immediately
  5. Crave tea {Tea isn’t mentioned in the shows but, ya know, BRITISH}

I would recommend starting with the French Gardens series. I genuinely feel 1000 times more cultured from watching it. Like, someone plz invite me to your cocktail party ASAP because I have the most enthralling garden tidbits to bestow upon you. Let’s go. Italian Gardens isn’t as good but once you’re hooked you’re hooked. Big Dreams, Small Spaces is HGTV style garden renos. Super satisfying. We may have watched 7 episodes on NYE lol.

Atypical

A heartwarming series about a high-schooler on the autism spectrum navigating life alongside his family who are doing a lot of  navigating of their own. It is touching and poignant and FUNNY. I die for the episode where the main character, Sam, learns how to lie. Hint: It includes saying “obviously” multiple times in different tones of voice to convince people you aren’t lying lol.

Queer Eye

OBVI. I feel like I don’t even need to mention this but if you haven’t binged both seasons of the new Queer Eye you haven’t lived TBH. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you feel FIERCE and you will definitely start following JVN on insta.

You will also have a crush on Antoni and go down a stalking rabbit hole for a bit. It’s fine. This is normal.

Dumplin

Not technically a binge since it’s a movie, but SO endearing and will make your heart smile without a doubt. Involves Dolly Parton, Beauty Pageants, Drag Queens and Jennifer Aniston. WIN WIN WIN WIN.

Tidying Up with Marie Kondo

I’ve loved the angel that is Marie Kondo ever since I read her book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, a few years ago. I talked about it a bit here. Seeing her method in action is so satisfying and will definitely inspire you to “tidy” your life AKA get rid of all the unnecessary shit you own. Plus she is like an actual baby angel and completely adorable.

For All the Dramz

Penn Badgley You on Netflix

You

Not gonna lie, we started this morning and are already 6 episodes deep. It’s the first time I’ve seen Penn Badgley (above) since Gossip Girl and even though he plays a super creepy stalker/psychopath I still have a major crush on him. HOW COULD WE NOT? This is kind of Gossip Girl  2.0 meets Dexter meets Revenge and I’m ABOUT IT. Well done, well acted, pretty racy.

The end of the F***ing World

This series came on Netflix early last year and I surprisingly didn’t hear that much about it. It’s a British Dark Comedy with a lot of laughs, a lot of heart and a little murder. How can you wrong? Almost made it to the feel-good section but felt weird due to include something with so much blood there.

Riverdale

Again, this feels like a Queer Eye rec because I assume everyone knows about it and loves it but if you somehow missed it- BINGE THIS GEM. It’s a teen drama based on the Archie Comics series. Similar to the previous two picks it’s got some murder, some mystery and a lot of sass. Very tongue in cheek- I love how they sometimes poke fun at themselves for being campy.

Obviously there are some classics and other binge-worthy specials on Netflix, these are just some more recent favs.  Plz Lmk if I’ve missed your fav- always need options for our next binge opportunity.
