The One Sentence that Turned me Into a Morning Person

This one sentence can make you a morning person

Raise your hand if “wake up earlier” has been on your to-do list for years. (Hi, it’s me. I’m raising my hand). I feel like most people want to be a morning person. We all want more time in our days to chase dreams, spend time with family & friends, get outside, etc. So WHY TF is it still so hard to wake up early??

I just finished “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod and while I had mixed feelings about the book overall (post with key lessons & takeaways coming soon) one concept literally CHANGED MY LIFE and, I kid you not, I would now classify myself as a “morning person.” After being a “snoozer” my entire life I now have 7 weeks of 6am wake up’s under my belt to prove it.

To avoid being like one of those food bloggers who makes you scroll to the bottom of the post to get the recipe, let’s get right to it. The one sentence that completely shifted my perspective is…

No matter how well-rested you are, you will never wake-up feeling AWAKE.

GAME CHANGER. Without realizing it, I had the idea in my head that if I woke up in the morning still feeling tired that meant I needed more sleep. I didn’t think about the fact that no matter how much sleep we get, your body is still waking up from a deep sleep. It’s basically like an engine that takes a little time to warm up.

In the book, Elrod refers to this as your “Wake Up Motivation Level” which he says, regardless of how well-rested you are, will start at about a 1 or a 2 on a scale of 1- 10. With 1 being “you want absolutely nothing more than to go back to sleep” and 10 being “ready to hop up and embrace the day.”

The idea that it was NORMAL to wake up and still feel tired completely and immediately shifted my perspective.

Now, instead of an internal, half-awake battle of “should I try to squeeze more sleep in?” I know that I just need to push through the fog I’m feeling and take steps to help my body through the wake up process until I feel more awake. It usually takes me about 20 minutes to actually “wake up” after I physically wake up. Then once I’m awake I’m SO glad I got up, because I have so much more time in my day!

Right when I get up I go into a set of things that help me mentally wake up and head into my morning routine. Like I said, I’ve successfully been waking up at 6am for the last few weeks and I owe a lot of it to this one concept. Let me know if it makes as much of a difference for you as it has for me!
