30 Makeup Tips from Top Celeb Makeup Artist Pati Dubroff

I truly LOVE living in LA. I mean yes, there are times I curse the traffic, or days when it’s exhausting to get to the grocery store, but more often than not I am an LA Julie Andrews, twirling around and singing Sound-of-Music-style about this city’s magic.

Where else can you attend a FREE event where you sit mere feet from one of the world’s TOP makeup artists and have her teach you all her makeup tips and tricks?! And then gift you her 5 favorite Chanel beauty products?! Unreal.

Last week I attended a once-in-a-lifetime session at The Lineup by WhoWhatWear with celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff . Pati works with the likes of Margot Robbie, Priyanka Chopra, Laura Dern, Amanda Seyfreid, Elizabeth Olsen… I could go on and on. She recreated looks she did for Margot and Priyanka and spilled allll the makeups tips and tricks.

I took PAGES of notes for you {and me} so without further ado, get ready to have your face blessed with her wisdom:

Pre-Makeup Musts:

“If I have an hour and a half to do someone’s makeup, Im spending 20 minutes massaging and icing their skin”

+ It is all about the importance of skin prep! Facial massage for lymphatic drainage. Ice rollers. Ice packs. They all make your makeup look better.

+ Mattifying primer is KEY for large pores and fine lines. If you have an exceptionally large pore, literally pack it in there like putty

+ Only put hydration (moisturizer) on the perimeter and highlight places of your face. Don’t use it in the center of your face if you get oily

+ Most important advice when doing your makeup: do it in natural lighting!

+ Your skin health is equal to the health of your gut + the health of your makeup bag / tools. You MUST keep your tools CLEAN

Foundation Station

+ ALWAYS use two shades of foundation – darker for perimeter and under cheekbones. Lighter in the center

+ Match your center foundation to your neck, it will brighten and open up your face. Match your second foundation color to your cheek

+ When using loose powder to set, don’t use it over highlighter

+ Use as little product on your face as possible. You don’t need foundation or concealer everywhere- let skin be on it’s own where it’s not needed

Brows and Lashes

+ Start light with brow color, you can always go darker. If you have highlights in your hair start with that shade

+ Always curl your lashes, it is like opening the blinds to your face

+ Go strong with your brow if you have a strong lip to create balance

+ Be sure to anchor your brow on both sides: the tail and the center should BOTH be anchors, not one or the other

+ If you have oily skin use brow powder to reinforce your brow and it will help your pencil stay on longer

Blush Products and Placement

+ For placement smile and focus color on the meaty part of your cheek

+ Never get blush too close to your eyes or nose. We always want the center of the face to stay bright

+ Pick your blush color to be harmonious with your lip and outfit color. Either a different shade in the same family, or a complimentary color

All about Eyes

+ When doing a strong liner, DON’T FORGET dimension on the rest of your eye. Pati likes to use THIS product to add dimension

+ Use your foundation brush as a clean-up tool with whatever product is left on the brush from your original application

+ Always use a cream or pencil liner FIRST to get your shape down. This makes for easier clean up with a q-tip and micellar water. AFTER you’ve got your base shape down lock it in with a liquid liner

+ Follow the shape of your eye and then lift at the eye corner. Typically only line the outer 3/4 of the eye and leave the inner 1/4 alone

+ Pati typically doesn’t use eyeshadow primer but does use a neutral cream eyeshadow as a base

+ Shine should go in the center of the lid to open up the eyes, it should NOT go on the brow bone. Okay to add some shine to inner corners as well, but not a spotlight

Lip Service

+ A nude lip should not be lighter than the natural lip tone or you will look dead

+ Spend time pushing product into the lip in thin layers versus one strong layer. It results in a more natural look and longer staying power. People often want to do a single swipe of lipstick and be done, but thin layers are the key

+ Use lipstick, THEN liner. Don’t use liner on a dry lip- it works best when it has something to slide against

+ You don’t need to use liner all the way around your lip, only use it where your lip shape or color need “support”. No liner in the lip corners

+ TIP: line a bit on the inner part of your lip near the opening because that’s where color wears off first.

The Ultimate Red Carpet Hack

I asked Pati if she ever brings foundation down the neck. She said not only does she bring it down the neck, every part of exposed skin will get makeup on the red carpet! She uses a mixture of foundation, body makeup and lotion and will apply to backs, hands, feet – ANYWHERE that skin is showing!

Pati’s Favorite Products:

+ Soleil Tan
+ Baum Essential Stick in Transparent
+ Le Volume Mascara
+ Le Creme Main
+ Stylo Ombre Contour
+ Hydra Beauty Lip Baum

Hope you found these tips as helpful as I did! There were so many tips I hadn’t heard before! Thanks so much to WhoWhatWear and Pati for the incredible event.
